Growing after Christmas, hellebores were thought to have magical powers and provides hope after difficult times. It was used as a medicine into the middle-ages despite being toxic. 

The Latin name is 'narcissus' which stems from another Greek legend.  Narcissus was a hunter who fell in love with himself and saw his own image in the reflection of a pond. After being unable to leave due as he was bewitched by his image, he eventually died and they said a daffodil grew where he lay to mark his grave. 

Not a usual flower for florists, but they are just coming up in my garden, with some of the first to provide colour in January. Their meaning is so obvious for me, it almost doesn't need to be stated!
